Welcome to Ōpunakē

Ōpunakē is a cool little surf town on Surf Highway 45. Situated 64 km south-west of New Plymouth and 43 km north-west of Hāwera, with a 2021 population of 1,440.

A great service town in provincial Taranaki, it is surrounded by dairy farmers, the mighty Taranaki Mountain, Maunga, and some of the best surf spots in the world.

Explore the 7 km Ōpunakē Loop Trail by bike or foot, see stunning views of our rugged coastline and visit the black sand Ōpunakē beach. Maybe catch a movie at the beautifully restored, boutique, Everybody’s Theatre.
