Opunake, it's happening here!

Progress Opunake is Established!

Monique Sinclair is the new Chairperson for the Opunake Business Association. Monique and husband Brian's business is Sinclair Electrical & Refrigeration. There was a discussion at the AGM on how the association needs to branch out more, include more interested members of the community and focus on Opunake as a whole. Therefore, Progress Opunake is established. Bring your ideas to the next meeting, 7 May.

Coastal care
Charity Fundraising Auction Evening - $270,000 raised.
Charity Auction

This evening was a huge success and the Coastal Care Facility is one step closer, thanks to the generosity of Taranaki people. Generosity by way of a cheque for $200,000 from a coastal idenity was the first donation received on the night. Next was a head spinning auction for holiday homes, paintings, heat pump and much much more raising over $50,000. We were then entertained by a very funny and witty, Tom Scott, who provided us with stories of his days as a political cartoonist. Tom then offered to draw anyone who wished to pay a goodly price for his services. The evening closed with the announcements of the results for the silent auction and even more donations from some wonderful generous people. The total approxiamate amount raised on the evening was around $250,000. This amount will be adjusted once costs for the evening are finalised.

All proceeds go towards the building of the Coastal Care Facility in Opunake. For more information visit the website www.coastalcare.co.nz

Situated right on the coast overlooking a magnificent swimming beach, Opunake is the central service area for the surrounding farming community and the central town in Coastal Taranaki.

As well as having one of the richest dairying pasture in New Zealand, the discovery of oil and gas in Taranaki has further added to the prosperity of the coast. The Maui Production Station at Oaonui, its offshore platform and the Ammonia/Urea Plant at Kapuni both bring business to the area.

Mt Egmont National Park draws tourists from all over New Zealand and further afield. With its numerous mountain walks and well equipped huts, Mt Taranaki is a year round attraction to the tramper as well as a popular ski field.

For the sports enthusiast, the coast offers great surf breaks, deep sea fishing, boating, windsurfing - in fact virtually any sport. Opunake itself, because of its relaxed lifestyle, has attracted a large number of retired people as well as holiday makers.

It is a friendly community with numerous facilities and activities. These include a community owned picture theatre, indoor heated swimming pool and an active theatre group which all help contribute to a strong community spirit.
