Ōpunakē is a cool little surf town on Surf Highway 45. It is situated 64km south-west New Plymouth and 43km north-west of Hawera. In 2021 its population was 1,440. Ōpunakē is a great service town in provincial Taranaki and is surrounded by dairy farms, some of the best surfing spots in the world and overlooked by the mighty Mount Taranaki.

Explore the Ōpunakē Loop Trail by bike or on foot. It will take you past stunning views of our rugged coastline, two beaches, historic sites, and the Ōpunakē Lake. Maybe you would like to catch a movie at Everybody's Theatre which is beautifully restored and manned by volunteers. There are several food options from takeaways to cafes and pubs along Tasman street.​
